Online journalism has become so fashionable that many newspapers have closed their doors. This presents several problems to news organizations that want to offer relevant content to their readers but don’t know how to make money in an online industry that seems to give away more than it sells. As news organizations look towards the future, many journalists can expect to see that their employer’s dramatically change their business models to generate profits through online content.
Advertising
Online journalism often makes money through advertising. This has been a fairly easy transition for most newspapers because they print versions thrived on ads too. They can, therefore, use their connections to continue making money online. In fact, some companies have found that online advertising gives them access to a wider range of clients. Local newspapers usually make money by advertising for local businesses. Online newspapers, however, can advertise for local, national and Internet businesses.
Subscriptions
Some news organizations provide free content to their online readers. Others charge subscription fees for online access. Neither of these models seems to work that well for many businesses. When you charge a subscription fee, readers will simply go elsewhere for information. When all of your content is free, though, it is hard to make enough money to pay professional journalists for strong content that will attract more readers. Many organizations have taken a middle path. They offer some free content, but charge subscription fees for “premium” content. They might also offer the first page of a story for free, but charge readers who want access to the whole story.
Events
Even with advertising and subscriptions, many newspapers and magazines find that they cannot make enough money to stay in business. They, therefore, have to get creative. Some magazines have found that they can make money by hosting events in the real world. This brings together like-minded people who are willing to pay cover charges for discussions, parties and other events.
